2013 Capabilities

I'm a few weeks late on the resolution train, but that's fine, because many of the people who make ridiculous resolutions have already given up. You're not going to lose 90 pounds, crazy.

Anyway, as I've said before and will say again, capability is far and away the best way we ought to measure goals and achievement. Obviously, with something like learning a language, just saying "I can speak X language well" is pretty meaningless without some sort of assessment, but that assessment might well be carrying a conversation with someone who is speaking normally in said language without slowing down to help you. Or it could be a test. (A lot of tests are crappy but that doesn't mean the mere idea of one is a failure.)

Today - and I'm going to tag you individually in the comments throughout the week if you don't respond - I want you to choose something (or explain something you have already chosen) that you will be able to do by the end of the year (or even sooner). And share with us a few steps you will take to achieve said goals.

For me, by the end of 2013, I will learn how to relax. You would think this is easy but for me it's damn near impossible. It's why I don't sleep as much as I could or should and why it catches up to me when I don't want it to (ie at Odessa). I have been trying and failing to build "relax" time into my life for years, and I mostly just end up with other forms of stimulation (eg Sporcle).

So this year, I'm going to work really hard at my new job to the point that, when I am not in the office, I don't have to fret about unfinished things. And I am really going to make sure I cherish my free Mondays as days when many errands can be run so that they aren't left to other days of the week. I'm going to have just enough money for one monthly splurge on myself to make my life easier or better, and I will make sure I use it. I'm going to try new restaurants when I can afford it, and I'm going to stay healthy but not deprive myself of delicious things. Which means one way I'm going to relax is by really getting into new recipes some evenings, healthy, veggie food I can turn to and bite into for bliss. I'm not going to bother worrying about weight much at all, since I really have made my diet such that it's not an issue anymore. And with one marathon down, I won't really stress during this year's training.

Hopefully, if I take all or most or even just some of these steps - starting in March, I suppose, once I'm settled into my job - I can learn to relax and settle into the type of adulthood I've been looking to find for five years. My friends, family and girlfriend will help.

And by the time the next year rolls around, I will be rested and energized all at once.

What about you?

Peace and love,
