13 Things I Learned In Grad Scho

Now that grad school is over, I can offer some pithy assessment. I'll be stentorian and stoic when I give my speech, but here's some fun.

Why 13? Because I like that number, fuck you. :)

1. Absolutely do not apply for, pay for, and attend graduate classes unless you can see a career ahead of you that the additional degree will help you achieve. [READ MORE]

Be Like Me

It has occurred to me that a lot of the times we criticize people for their actions (note, I said 'actions' not beliefs) we are essentially saying one of two things: be like me or don't be like me (if you believe you are prone to failure with respect to certain things).

This isn't necessarily a bad thing - sometimes, ya know, you're right and they're wrong - but there are times when we need to step back and recognize that most folks just operate in a different manner.

I'm not talking about people committing crimes or evil here. [READ MORE]

Qualified

Whenever someone applies to a job, the posting or application mentions qualifications needed to apply. If the job is writing about race or gender or sexuality etc professionally, you have to show you know what the hell you're talking about. Back in the pre-net days, you couldn't just spout your own thoughts about it for everyone to see (like I do now).

The internet doesn't have qualifications. [READ MORE]

Bias vs. Bigotry

We're all biased. And bias isn't necessarily harmful. We're biased towards our friends and family. We're biased towards our favorite sports teams, movies, books and tv shows. We're biased towards the brands of food we prefer. And biased against all the things we don't.

Bias can be just fine. [READ MORE]

May Day Plea

So it's “May Day” today.

Instead of being really dumb and giving up my meager paycheck to be a nuisance, I'm going to send the same message to you I have to my family friends who have been eager to help.

You've seen me post about my fundraising for the marathon, and so here's your chance – the chance for you, the peers I value the most – to toss these kids a few dollars so that they can have a better shot to grow up healthy. [READ MORE]

This is just for fun. First, watch this video and laugh.

Second, now we're going to do something similar.

You need to think of three (real) people with whom you could be associated by others for some reason. [READ MORE]

Seeing Red

I keep mentioning this to some of you but most of you don't know what I'm talking about. My friends who have known me for many years know this to be true.

I want to share with you a bit of what it was like inside my head when I thought in a negative manner.

First off, I was immature. [READ MORE]

Monochrome

So, I guess it was inevitable that I fire off a note about this for everyone to chime in on, so here it goes.

I talk a lot about pop culture, but I think you will all agree that I call out unfair depictions of POCs whenever I see them.

I don't like it in "2 Broke Girls" (where most of the blame goes to a man, LGBT though he is), I don't like it in "Transformers" (where the blame goes entirely to a man), and I don't like the erasure on "Girls." The latter, of course, particularly galls me because I KNOW, for a personal fact, that she KNOWS NYC residents of color. [READ MORE]

Limits

I posted about this before, but this is slightly different. I want us to talk about our limitations. No, this will not, I repeat will not, be an excuse to throw up our hands to declare things a limit just so we can give up on them. But part of being an adult – and we are all adults – is knowing what we can excel at, and what limitations we have. [READ MORE]
