Relationships Under Pressure

So, recently, I came across an article that explained how interracial marriages are on the rise as the stigma within the society decreases. (I posted it last week but here it is again.)

The main change, it seems, is, like with other things with race, that overt, Klan-style racist threats have abated (and I am not complaining about this).

So there's a smaller (though still extant) stigma around the country about marrying (or dating) someone from a different ethnic background. [READ MORE]

Deadly Weapons

Good day to you all.

As you probably know, I don't particularly like weapons, nor do I like watching (real) violence (as opposed to a fictional movie, say), even if it's sanctioned by the rules of a game or sport. But I am not so naïve as to pretend it's not a fact of life. [READ MORE]

The Good Kind of Other?

Those of you who are well-off, white, straight, able-bodied males can probably sit this one out. (Unless you lived in, say, Korea, where that isn't the norm...)

Because the question I'm asking today is for those of us who have, at some point, or perhaps every day, felt like an “other” from the mainstream. [READ MORE]

Whelmed

Yay, back on Informed because I got my computer back!

(If you're wondering, yes, I will go back to more provocative issues soon, hard to write an essay with links with the tablet, but my computer is back, so next week, real instigation.)

I know 'whelmed' is not a word, but we spend a whole lot of time trying not to be overwhelmed (and a fair amount of time complaining when we're underwhelmed) that it seems 'whelmed' is the state we would truly prefer.

So today I want to ask you: how do you get back to whelmed?

Stress and boredom (so, being over or underwhelmed) lead to some of our very worst forms of behavior, and I know it's the case for me, too.

So when I'm underwhelmed I plan. [READ MORE]

"Your" Niche

So according to Hollywood, I should love things like “Who's Your Caddy?” and Kevin Hart stand-up movies. I couldn't possibly have a complex series of groups of which I consider myself a member, and thus have an accordingly complex taste in movies. We're all, at most, three things, usually an age range, a gender, and some third attribute, sometimes religion or perhaps location (urban/rural). [READ MORE]

Get Out of Prejudice Free

“2 Broke Girls” is fine. Kat Dennings has been funny in various things since “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” and Beth Behrs does her job very well. I do not understand the horse (because, wtf?), or the fact that, as annoying as hipsters are, the non-character-based jokes are so heavily hipster-based, but it's fine. [READ MORE]

Why I don't hate musicians

Remember Shania Twain? She was huge was for a while there. Did you know that her album “Come On Over” sold 40 million copies worldwide? That's a lot. She had a few albums before and after that. But no one talks about her now. I'm sure she does shows every so often. [READ MORE]
